MANAROLA AND ITS SURROUNDING AREAS...

Manarola’s village started to be built at the beginning of the thirteenth century by the inhabitants of Volastra, who were trying to get easy access to the sea. It’s the second village of the beautiful 5 Terre, coming from La Spezia’s main train station. Manarola’s name comes from the latin «Manium Arula», i.e. a little temple dedicated to the “mani” (the deads’ souls). San Giorgio Guest House is located right in the middle of this old village.

The tower-houses, tall and colourful, connected to one another by precipitious slate stairways and with their picturesque “carugi” or narrow streets, clinging onto a steep dark rock; these very houses turn the village of Manarola into a bewitching nest!

We advise the visitor to stroll along Belvedere Street: this narrow street (Carugio) flows into a square dedicated to the poet Eugenio Montale, then opens up to the sea and its characteristic little harbor, a call for boats enclosed between two rocky spurs. A little path amidst rocks and cactus leads the visitor from the harbor to Bonfiglio’s cape, where he/she will enjoy an enchanting view over the village and the sea.

Moreover, today, the remains of the castle, a stony built building, shape rounded and well recognizable amid the rocks, incorporated into a private home, but one time, a long time ago, a defensive bulwark against pirates.

Finally, on the upper side of the village, the visitor will find: Pope Innocent IV with the Church of Mary’s Nativity, built with a gothic-Ligurian style, the latter also known as Saint Lawrence Church, the Oratory of the Disciplined, the XIV century Bell Tower and the old S. Rocco’s Hospital too.

HOW TO REACH US

san Giorgio Guest House stands right in the centre of Manarola, next to the “Via dell’Amore”, just 50 metres away from the train station and only five minutes away on foot from the main parking space inside the village.

BY TRAIN

For comfort purposes and also taking into account the frequency of the service, it is advisable to reach Manarola’s village by train. Once outside the train station you will just need to cross the tunnel to find yourself in the centre of the village, right where we are, the San Giorgio Guest House. There are several regional trains (on the hour) stopping in all the 5 villages. Timetables and helpful information are available either visiting the website www.trenitalia.com or through enquiring at the time of booking, just ask us directly!

BY CAR

A lit up paying parking space stands right upstream of the inhabited centre. Coming from Genoa or Leghorn on the A12 motorway, come off it at the toll booth La Spezia-S.Stefano Magra. Once you have  gone through La Spezia, take the SP32, called the “Litoranea of 5 Terre” and in about a quarter of an hour you will come close to the crossroads leading to Riomaggiore. Always sticking to the “Litoranea” road you will shortly meet the crossroads to Manarola then, from there, you will get to the village’s parking area.
